
Spanish Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told the World Economic Forum (WEF) today that social network owners should be held accountable for “poisoning society” and undermining democracy with their algorithms.
He said he would propose at the EU Council meeting to abolish social media anonymity and make algorithms more transparent.
“A restaurant owner is liable if his customers are poisoned by his food; social media operators should also be held accountable if their algorithms poison our society. Let’s take back control. “Let’s make social media great again,” Sanchez said.
He acknowledged that social media has brought some benefits, such as connecting people, but that there is another side to the coin, “hidden in the bowels of algorithms like intruders hidden in a Trojan horse.”
