Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer faces increasing backlash from House Democrats after supporting a Republican-led resolution to prevent a government shutdown. While no Democrat has officially demanded his resignation, frustration is spreading rapidly.
Lawmakers Begin Calling for Leadership Change
During a town hall on Tuesday, Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) responded “yes” when asked if Schumer should step down, Axios reported. Similarly, Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) called for his removal as chairman. The progressive group Indivisible also joined the push for new leadership.

Why Democrats Are Angry
House Democrats feel betrayed after Schumer backed the GOP’s spending bill. Only one House Democrat voted in favor. Many opposed it because it failed to include provisions restricting the Department of Government Efficiency’s budget cuts.
Schumer defended his decision, arguing that a shutdown would have allowed former President Donald Trump to accelerate his push to shrink the federal government.
Ivey: Schumer’s Future Depends on His Next Move
“I don’t have a personal issue with Schumer. He’s talented,” Ivey told Axios. “But my concern is whether he’ll do this again when the current resolution expires in September.”
Ivey, who represents a Maryland district with a large number of federal employees, warned that Schumer’s future depends on how he handles the next funding battle.
Growing Demand for New Leadership
A senior House Democrat, speaking anonymously, told Axios that calls for leadership change existed even before this vote. Recent House elections showed a “desire for generational change,” and Schumer’s decision has only intensified that demand.
Most House Democrats have stayed silent, knowing they have little say in Senate leadership. However, some lawmakers are feeling grassroots pressure, and few are willing to defend Schumer.
Voters Are Paying Attention
Ivey said his constituents are voicing frustration. “People bring it up at the grocery store,” he said. “They saw the flip-flop—voting for cloture but against final passage—and they weren’t fooled.”
At Ramirez’s town hall, several attendees also called for Schumer’s resignation.
Schumer Stands Firm
Despite the criticism, Schumer remains defiant. On The View, he defended his leadership, arguing that his ability to recruit strong candidates makes him essential to the party’s success.
