Rome, Italy – Pope Francis, 88, has been diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs, and his condition remains challenging, according to an official statement from the Vatican on Tuesday.
Pope Admitted to Gemelli Hospital for Treatment
The head of the Roman Catholic Church had been experiencing respiratory issues for over a week before being hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday.
A Vatican spokesperson confirmed that a CT scan conducted that afternoon detected pneumonia in both lungs, requiring additional medical therapy.
Health Struggles Before Hospitalization
Prior to his admission, Pope Francis had been showing bronchitis-like symptoms and had assigned other Vatican officials to deliver his scheduled speeches at public appearances.
His susceptibility to lung infections stems from a previous case of pleurisy, which led to the removal of part of one lung when he was 21 years old.
Pope Francis’ Health History
Throughout his 12-year leadership of the Catholic Church, the Pope has faced multiple hospitalizations. In March 2023, he spent three nights in the hospital due to bronchitis, highlighting ongoing concerns about his respiratory health.
Concerns Over Pope Francis’ Condition
With his age and medical history, Vatican officials and Catholics worldwide are monitoring his recovery closely. Doctors are continuing intensive treatment in hopes of stabilizing his condition.
