A growing salmonella outbreak tied to a major egg recall in the U.S. has left at least 79 people ill, federal health officials confirmed. The eggs—distributed under multiple brand names—were sold between February and May 2025 and may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
Majority of Salmonella Cases Reported in California
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most of the reported illnesses (63 cases) occurred in California. Other affected states include Nevada and Washington (4 cases each), as well as Arizona, Kentucky, Nebraska, and New Jersey. So far, 21 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
1.7 Million Eggs Recalled by August Egg Company
The recall was issued by August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California. It includes approximately 1.7 million brown cage-free and organic eggs sold under various brands at major grocery chains.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated the eggs were sold between February 3 and May 15, 2025, and have sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19, 2025. The affected eggs were distributed to:
- Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Raley’s, Ralphs, Safeway , Walmart stores in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, and Wyoming
Consumers can find a full list of impacted brands and plant codes on the FDA and CDC websites.
What Consumers Should Do
The CDC urges consumers to avoid eating any recalled eggs, even if they look or smell normal. Instead, they should throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased.
Additionally, any surfaces or kitchen tools that may have come into contact with the eggs should be cleaned with hot, soapy water or placed in the dishwasher to eliminate possible salmonella bacteria.
Symptoms of Salmonella Infection
Salmonella symptoms typically appear 6 hours to 6 days after infection and may include:
- Diarrhea, Fever, Abdominal cramps, Vomiting
Most people recover without medical treatment, but young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness.
If you’ve purchased eggs recently, check the brand and sell-by date immediately. For more updates, visit the FDA and CDC websites.
