Supreme Court Responds to Trump’s Attack on Federal Judge
Chief Justice John Roberts has defended the judiciary after President Donald Trump demanded the impeachment of a federal judge. The judge had blocked the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members.
The dispute began when U.S. District Judge James Boasberg halted the removal of over 200 individuals tied to the Tren de Aragua gang. Trump, angered by the ruling, called Boasberg a with unpolite words on his social media and demanded his removal.

Roberts Defends Judicial Independence
Roberts issued a rare statement, indirectly addressing Trump’s remarks. “For more than 200 years, impeachment has not been a response to judicial decisions,” he said. “The proper way to challenge a ruling is through appeals.”
His comments, released hours after Trump’s post, sent a clear message. The Chief Justice urged political leaders to respect the courts and follow legal procedures instead of attacking judges.

Trump Responds to Roberts’ Statement
When asked about Roberts’ comments on Fox News, Trump dismissed them. “Well, he didn’t mention my name,” Trump said. “I just saw it quickly. He didn’t say my name.”
He also claimed that “many people” supported removing Boasberg.
For more than two centuries, the question of whether to impeach judges has been left solely to the elected representatives of the American people. John Roberts has no say in the matter, regardless of how much he wishes otherwise. Our Constitution gives John Roberts no power… pic.twitter.com/3mzWlCX1z0

Why Judge Boasberg Blocked the Deportations
The case centers on Boasberg’s decision to halt deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. The Biden administration had arranged for El Salvador to accept the deportees, paying $6 million for the transfer. However, officials have not disclosed the names of those sent to El Salvador.
White House Criticizes Judge’s Ruling
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller slammed Boasberg’s decision. He called it “unlawful” and said one judge should not control international deportations. “A single district court judge should not override the president’s authority on immigration,” Miller stated.
Trump Faces More Legal Roadblocks
This case adds to a growing list of legal battles challenging Trump-era policies. A judge in California recently ordered the reinstatement of thousands of fired government workers. Another judge in Maryland ruled similar job terminations illegal.
Despite the Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative majority, Roberts’ public statement marks a rare break from Trump.
Legal Experts Warn Against Attacks on Courts
The American Bar Association (ABA) has also raised concerns. Earlier this month, it warned against attempts to intimidate judges. “Threats to judicial independence must not be tolerated,” the ABA stated.
Elon Musk Calls for Judicial Impeachments
Tech billionaire Elon Musk also weighed in. In February, he posted, “If judges ignore the will of the people, they must be removed—otherwise, democracy is at risk!”
Judicial Independence Under Threat?
This dispute highlights a bigger issue. Should politicians be allowed to pressure judges? Or should courts remain independent to uphold the law?
As legal battles continue, the clash between Trump and the judiciary is far from over.
