The State Department has told Congress it will dissolve the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Key operations will shift under its control by July 1.

A Major Shake-Up in Foreign Aid
This decision ends a massive agency criticized for wasting billions on ineffective foreign aid programs. Critics argue these efforts failed to benefit the U.S.
The Trump administration pledged to cut wasteful government spending. Officials accused USAID of mismanaging funds and supporting overseas projects with little impact on national interests.
Rubio Praises the Move
Senator Marco Rubio supports the decision. He stresses the importance of properly managed foreign aid:
“Responsible foreign assistance strengthens security, protects borders, and builds alliances. USAID lost its way, and costs outweighed benefits. Thanks to President Trump, aid programs now align with American interests. Life-saving initiatives continue, but wasteful spending stops. This is another fulfilled promise.”
Restructuring for Efficiency
CNN reports that Jeremy Lewin, a senior official overseeing the transition, assured staff the reorganization would improve accountability and streamline aid efforts.
Lewin emphasized that merging USAID into the State Department allows the U.S. to “speak with one voice in foreign affairs.” Critical programs, such as humanitarian aid and global health, will continue. Many regional development projects will move to the State Department. Redundant functions will be cut.
Jobs and Budget Adjustments
A memo from the State Department, cited by the New York Post, says USAID may rehire some employees to manage key aid programs. However, non-essential positions will be eliminated.
The document states: “This transition enhances efficiency, accountability, and strategic impact in foreign aid—allowing the administration to present a unified approach to global affairs. USAID will no longer operate independently.”
A Win for Taxpayers
Many Americans oppose wasteful foreign aid. This restructuring signals a shift toward fiscal responsibility. By cutting redundant programs, the government ensures taxpayer dollars serve national priorities.
