Elon Musk has left his senior adviser position in the Trump administration. He served as a Special Government Employee. He announced his departure on X, the platform he owns.
Musk’s Statement on X
“I’ve completed my term as a Special Government Employee,” Musk wrote. He thanked President Trump for the chance to cut wasteful spending. He pledged that DOGE’s mission would grow within government.
As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.

The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.
A White House official confirmed Musk’s resignation to the AP.
Critique of the “Big, Beautiful Bill”
Musk voiced frustration with Trump’s tax-and-spending package. He called it a deficit-increasing proposal, not a deficit reducer. His comments came in a CBS interview excerpt airing Sunday.
Musk on Budget Deficit
“I’m disappointed this bill increases the budget deficit,” Musk said.
He warned it could undermine DOGE’s progress in government.
About the DOGE Initiative
Musk founded the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE’s team cut federal jobs and canceled contracts. It claims over $175 billion in savings so far. Critics question those figures and call for verification.
Key Features of Trump’s Spending Plan
The bill boosts defense and border security funding. It extends Trump’s first-term tax cuts. It cuts renewable-energy, Medicaid, and entitlement program funds. Nonpartisan analysts predict it will add trillions to the debt.
Congressional Response
The House passed the bill last week. It now moves to the Senate, where Republicans hold a slim majority.
Some GOP senators have raised concerns about the debt impact.
Trump’s Reaction
Trump said he dislikes certain aspects of the bill. He also praised other parts of the package. He plans to negotiate its final form with Congress
Investor Pressure & Musk’s Focus
Investors urged Musk to concentrate on Tesla and SpaceX. In April, he said he’d cut his time with DOGE starting May. “My heavy lifting with DOGE is mostly complete,” he noted.
Future Political Engagement
On May 20, Musk told CNBC he’d spend only a few days in D.C. each month. He plans to help when he can.
He also said he may reduce political donations after giving $250 million to Trump’s campaign.
Senate Pushback
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said enough senators could halt the bill. They want serious deficit-reduction measures first. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) called the bill’s cuts “wimpy.” He warned the math does not add up.
