US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education, calling it a “breathtaking failure.”
Trump’s Plan to Shut Down the Education Department
“We’re going to shut it down as quickly as we can. It doesn’t do us any good,” Trump said. However, the White House admits that Congress must approve a full shutdown.
Trump added, “The United States spends more money on education than any other country,” yet students perform poorly worldwide.

Legal Challenges Expected
According to the BBC, legal challenges will likely delay the order. Many of Trump’s past efforts to shrink the government faced similar opposition.
Linda McMahon’s Role and Future

At the signing ceremony, Trump praised Linda McMahon, his Education Secretary pick. He hopes she will be the last to hold the position. If the department remains, he promised her another role.
Impact of the Executive Order
The order does not outline specific actions or programs to cut. It directs McMahon to “take all necessary steps” to close the department and shift duties to states and local governments.
What Does the Department of Education Do?
Created in 1979, the Department of Education manages student loans and helps low-income students. If not shut down, its funding and staff may be reduced.
