In the summer of 2023, a Virginia hospital observed unusual injuries affecting newborns. About a month ago, three infants in the neonatal intensive care unit reportedly sustained “inexplicable fractures,” as stated by Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.
The hospital became so alarmed that, last week, it announced a suspension of NICU admissions until the cause of the infants’ fractures could be determined.
Now, a registered nurse has been arrested and charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse.
On Friday, Henrico County Police revealed the arrest of 26-year-old Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman in connection with a November incident. In a news release, authorities stated that all cases of mysteriously injured infants at the hospital from 2023 and 2024 have been reopened for investigation.
According to the release, officers are reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage from the hospital in an effort to uncover what happened to at least seven infants.
“We are committed to protecting our residents, particularly our youngest and most vulnerable,” Police said
Prior to the arrest, hospital leadership intensified security protocols in a determined effort to uncover what was happening to the most vulnerable infants under their care.
“Between late November and December, we identified that three infants in our Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU had sustained inexplicable fractures, resembling an earlier incident involving four infants in the summer of 2023,” the hospital stated.
