Governor Gavin Newsom has reportedly struck an agreement with Democratic leaders in the state legislature to “Trump-proof” California against federal efforts to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
Meanwhile, wildfires have devastated the Los Angeles region, claiming dozens of lives and causing over $150 billion in damage. The severity of these fires has been exacerbated by a combination of factors, including mismanagement of water resources, prioritizing political agendas over practical governance, and Governor Newsom’s decision to cut over $100 million from wildfire prevention and response in the previous state budget.
Both Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are facing intense criticism for reducing critical funding for wildfire resilience programs and making cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). This comes despite repeated warnings from fire officials, insurance companies, and experts about the significant risks these decisions posed to California residents.
