Yesterday Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced that he will prohibit U.S. planes carrying deported immigrants from landing in Colombia. Petro shared this decision early Sunday morning in a post on social media X.
“The United States cannot criminalize Colombian migrants,” Petro stated in his post. He also urged Washington to establish a protocol that ensures migrants are being well treated with more respect and dignity.
These remarks reflect increasing dissatisfaction across Latin America regarding the U.S.’s planned large-scale deportations, a policy associated with new elected President Trump.
Brazil’s foreign ministry announced late Saturday that it would seek clarification from the U.S. government regarding the “degrading treatment” of Brazilian citizens on a recent deportation flight.
Similarly as the other countries, Mexico took a firm stance, denying permission for a deportation flight to land in the country.
As of now, representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have not responded to requests for comment. We will see what will happen in near future.
