On Tuesday, 21 federal employees resigned from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The employees, mostly software engineers and product managers, said they could no longer support an initiative that compromises Americans’ data and undermines public services.
The employees were originally part of the U.S. Digital Service. The department was rebranded as DOGE after Musk took over. Since then, DOGE has laid off thousands of workers. Musk has also pushed to shrink the government by dismantling entire agencies.
In their resignation letter, the employees addressed White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles. They explained that, despite their oath to serve the American people, they could no longer uphold that commitment under the current conditions.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt responded to the resignations. She said, “Don’t let the door kick in when you leave.”

Musk’s Growing Influence and Layoffs Spark Concerns
These resignations come amid growing concerns about DOGE’s reach. Musk’s team is gaining access to sensitive government data systems. They are also working on plans to overhaul government operations. Musk has even said he wants to “wipe out entire agencies.”
A recent controversy added to the tension. Millions of government employees received an email from the Office of Personnel Management. The email asked them to list what they had done over the past week. Musk hinted that failure to respond could cost them their jobs. This sparked panic and confusion among federal workers.
Legal experts are now debating whether Musk, as a senior adviser, has the legal authority to make such decisions.
Layoffs Impacting Key Government Services
The resignation letter also highlighted concerns about recent layoffs. Last week, 40 employees were let go. Many of them worked on vital government systems, including Social Security, Veterans Services, and disaster relief. These workers were essential to maintaining and securing these systems. Their removal threatens the security of millions of Americans who rely on these services.
The employees noted, “Their removal jeopardizes both the integrity of these systems and the security of Americans’ personal data.”
Political Influence and Growing Security Risks
Jonathan Cummens, one of the laid-off employees, believes he was targeted for publicly supporting Kamala Harris for president. He criticized Musk’s leadership, claiming that Musk cares more about consolidating power and growing his wealth than improving government services.
The letter also described a troubling encounter on January 21. Musk’s deputies, some with White House visitor badges, questioned staff about their political views and technical skills. The employees expressed concern that this process could lead to security risks within the department.
