Voice of America (VOA), once a global force against Nazi and communist propaganda, has stopped broadcasting news. Since Sunday, it has aired only music, and its offices remain locked.
Trump’s Order to Shut Down VOA
President Donald Trump has ordered the closure of VOA and seven other federal agencies. He justified the decision by stating that America can no longer afford to fund what he called “$267 million in radical left-wing propaganda.”

VOA Employees Placed on Leave
On Saturday, nearly all 1,300 VOA employees received an email notifying them of “paid administrative leave.” The email also stated they had “no access to offices and internal systems until further notice.”
Reasons Behind the Budget Cuts
According to the executive order, these cuts aim to save money, reduce unnecessary spending, and improve efficiency. The administration intends to strengthen its priorities by cutting waste, reducing harm, and fostering innovation.
Global Media Agency Ordered to Downsize
The Global Media Agency, which oversees VOA, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Free Asia, must submit a report within seven days. The report must confirm that the agency has eliminated functions and personnel as much as the law allows.
Impact on Global Broadcasts
Most VOA content originates from Washington and reaches partner networks worldwide. Although affiliated radio and TV stations can still broadcast, they will no longer receive content or funding from Washington.
A Legacy of Fighting Propaganda
VOA began in 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda during World War II. During the Cold War, it shifted its mission to combat communism and promote freedom. By the time of its closure, VOA broadcasted in 48 languages, including Macedonian, reaching millions—even in countries with strict media controls like China and Iran.

Accusations of Political Bias
VOA claims to maintain an independent editorial policy, regardless of the administration in power. However, during his first term, Trump accused VOA of bias against him. Before his second term, he claimed it spread “radical propaganda.”
Other Agencies Affected by the Order
Trump’s executive order also eliminated several federal agencies, including:
- Woodrow Wilson International Scholarship Center
- Institute of Museums and Library Services
- U.S. Homelessness Prevention Agency
- Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (focused on labor disputes)
- Community Development Fund
- Minority Business Development Agency
These cuts mark a significant shift in federal priorities under the Trump administration.
