Protests erupted across several European cities today targeting former U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk. The demonstrations came after the United States imposed new global counter-tariffs earlier this week.
In Frankfurt, the rally drew hundreds of protesters to the city’s central Opernplatz. The protest, called “Hands Off,” was organized by Democrats Abroad, a group representing American citizens living overseas.
Participants carried signs with bold messages like “Bring Back Democracy,” “Get Rid of Our Personal Data,” and “The World Is Tired, Go Away!”

American Expats Demand Trump Resignation
Protesters criticized Trump’s growing political influence and his role in escalating global tensions. Many called for his resignation and urged U.S. leaders to protect democracy.
“We’re tired of authoritarian behavior and corporate dominance,” said Rachel Levine, spokesperson for Democrats Abroad Germany. “Americans and allies worldwide deserve better.”
Although Trump is no longer in office, he continues to shape policy and political narratives. His support for the recent tariffs has sparked widespread concern across Europe.
US Tariffs Face Global Backlash
The new tariffs, aimed at “rebalancing” global trade, have already triggered warnings from European leaders. Many fear that retaliatory tariffs could harm both sides economically.
The U.S. government defended the decision, claiming it would protect domestic industries. However, economists say the policy may hurt consumers and damage international trade relationships.
European citizens and American expats strongly disagree with the approach. Today’s protests highlighted rising frustration with Trump’s aggressive stance on global trade.
Elon Musk Faces Rising Criticism
Protesters also targeted Elon Musk, accusing him of overreaching influence in global affairs. Many say Musk now plays a political role, not just a business one.
“He’s a tech oligarch,” said Johan Meier, a political science student at the University of Frankfurt. “He impacts AI, space, and social media without oversight.”
Activists criticized Musk for alleged misuse of personal data and his growing power over digital infrastructure. They believe his business empire lacks transparency and accountability.
Musk has previously brushed off criticism as “politically motivated.” His supporters praise him for driving innovation in space, AI, and green energy. But many protestors argue innovation should not come without responsibility.
Protests Spread Across Europe
The Frankfurt rally was just one of many. Similar demonstrations took place in Paris, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen. Each protest followed the same message: stop economic aggression and restore democratic values.
Signs and chants echoed calls for unity, fairness, and transparency. Organizers emphasized that today’s events were part of a wider global movement.
“This is about fighting unchecked power,” said Anna Fitzgerald, an American teacher living in Germany. “Trump and Musk symbolize a deeper problem.”
She added, “We need systems that protect people, not just profits.”
What Comes Next?
Democrats Abroad plans to continue organizing rallies in the lead-up to U.S. elections. They aim to mobilize American voters living in Europe and keep international pressure on U.S. policymakers.
“Democracy needs defending,” Levine said. “And that doesn’t stop at the U.S. border.”
Today’s protests show growing international concern about U.S. leadership and tech billionaires. As economic and political tensions rise, so does the global demand for change.
