NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has raised concerns over reports that Russia may be planning to place nuclear weapons in space. His comments were shared in an interview with the German outlet Die Welt.
Potential Threat to Global Security
Rutte stated that NATO has received information pointing to Russia’s interest in deploying space-based nuclear systems. He warned that such actions could present a “serious threat to global security.”

Target: Satellites, Not Earth
According to Rutte, these weapons would likely target satellites, not Earth itself. He explained that destroying satellites could lead to massive disruption.
“Many critical systems on Earth depend on satellite technology,” Rutte said. “Their loss would create chaos.”
Russia’s Space Race with the West
Rutte added that Russia is currently trailing behind Western countries in space capabilities. He believes Moscow is now trying to close that gap by focusing on nuclear anti-satellite weapons.
Growing Concerns in the West
NATO leaders have expressed increasing alarm over the militarization of space. Rutte’s remarks highlight the urgency of monitoring Russia’s next moves closely.
