Former President Barack Obama voiced strong support for Harvard University after it rejected a set of demands from the Trump administration.
Obama shared his message Monday night on X, commending Harvard for standing up to what he called an “unlawful and heavy-handed” attempt to silence academic freedom.

“Harvard is showing leadership,” Obama said. “They’re pushing back against overreach while working to foster respectful debate and intellectual freedom.”
Harvard Faces Funding Threat Over Antisemitism Claims
Earlier that day, Harvard confirmed it would not comply with new federal directives tied to antisemitism investigations. In response, a White House task force announced a freeze on billions in federal funding.
Harvard officials said the university remains committed to combating antisemitism and creating a safe environment for all students.
Obama Warns Against Government Intimidation of Universities
Speaking recently at Hamilton College in New York, Obama warned about growing federal pressure on universities.
“I worry less about specific policies and more about threats to institutional freedom,” Obama told the audience.
He said universities should only make changes if they’ve actually violated laws or values—not because they feel bullied.
“If there’s no wrongdoing, and it’s just intimidation, then institutions should hold their ground,” he added.
Universities Should Use Endowments to Defend Values, Obama Says
Obama suggested that schools use their endowments to protect academic freedom during times of political pressure.
“Skip the new gym or extra building,” he said. “Use the money to support researchers and uphold your mission.”
He emphasized that protecting free speech should remain a top priority, even if it means short-term sacrifices.
Trump Demands Harvard Lose Tax-Exempt Status
On Tuesday, Trump escalated the conflict. He called for Harvard to be stripped of its tax-exempt status.
“Maybe Harvard should be taxed like a political group,” Trump posted on his platform. “Tax exemptions require public service.”
As a nonprofit educational institution, Harvard currently doesn’t pay federal or Massachusetts state income tax.
White House Says Harvard Must Obey Federal Law
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced Trump’s message.
“The president has been clear—Harvard must follow the law,” she said.
Leavitt also demanded Harvard apologize for “egregious antisemitism” targeting Jewish students.
She accused the university of ignoring federal requests and not treating the issue seriously.
“All the president asks is compliance with federal law,” Leavitt stated. “If they do that, funding will resume.”
