Pope Francis, a beloved and often controversial figure in the Catholic Church, passed away today at 7:35 a.m. Rome time, according to an official statement from U.S. Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church.
Known for reshaping the modern papacy, Pope Francis brought a renewed sense of purpose to millions of Catholics around the world. His leadership was marked by a strong focus on compassion, humility, and action — especially in matters of poverty, immigration, and global dialogue. His personal approach to ministry touched countless lives, both inside and outside the Church.
The announcement of his death came from the chapel at Domus Sanctae Marthae, where Pope Francis had been staying as he recovered from pneumonia and other respiratory complications. He had only recently returned there after a lengthy hospital stay at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he had been under treatment for over five weeks.
“His entire life was a testament to serving God and the Church,” said Cardinal Farrell in a heartfelt video message. “He showed us how to live the Gospel with courage, compassion, and unwavering love — especially toward the poor and those on the margins of society.”
Cardinal Farrell concluded by expressing deep gratitude for Pope Francis’s example, describing him as a true servant of Christ. “We now entrust his soul to the infinite mercy of the Holy Trinity,” he said.
Pope’s Most Iconic Moment
In 2022 he went to Iraq in the north of the country, where an ancient Christian population is dwindling after the city of Mosul and the Nineveh Plains were shattered by militants from ISIS.
He then traveled to the largely Christian town of Qaraqosh, where the Church of the Holy Immaculate Conception was gutted by ISIS but has been renovated ahead of his visit. But this was also the place where ISIS filmed a video where they threatened the Pope (They said that they will conquer Rome and catch the pope and k*ll him).
