A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Turkey early Wednesday morning, sending tremors across the region and triggering widespread panic, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake, which occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers), had its epicenter approximately 14 miles (22 kilometers) southeast of Marmara EreÄŸlisi and about 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Istanbul.
While no fatalities have been reported, local hospitals confirmed an influx of patients suffering from anxiety-related symptoms. Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as residents fled their homes and gathered in open areas, including parks and public squares, fearing potential aftershocks.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging calm while assessing any potential structural damage.
