A wildfire has destroyed over 15,000 acres in southern New Jersey. Authorities have arrested 19-year-old Joseph Kling from Waretown. He is facing arson charges after allegedly starting the fire with a poorly extinguished bonfire.
Fire Began in Greenwood Wildlife Area
The fire was first reported Tuesday morning near Jones Road in the Greenwood Wildlife Management Area. Dry brush, high winds, and low humidity caused the flames to spread quickly. The fire jumped across the Garden State Parkway, forcing many to evacuate.
Over 5,000 Evacuated as Blaze Spread
Around 1,300 buildings were at risk. More than 5,000 people either evacuated voluntarily or under mandatory orders. Officials say the fire was 50% contained by Thursday morning. It is expected to keep growing due to weather conditions.
Investigation Links Fire to Improper Bonfire
Authorities tracked the fire’s origin to Waretown. They believe Kling set fire to wooden pallets and left without putting it out. He was arrested at the local police station and booked at the Ocean County Jail. A detention hearing is pending.

Firefighters Prevent Major Damage
Despite the fire’s size, damage to homes has been minimal. One commercial building was lost, and a few cabins were damaged. No injuries have been reported. Officials praised firefighters for stopping the fire from becoming a full-scale disaster.
Smoke Reaches New York City and Long Island
Winds have pushed wildfire smoke into parts of New York. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an air quality alert. Levels of fine particulate matter exceeded safe limits, especially for sensitive groups.
Poor Air Quality Expected to Continue
The alert covers New York City and Long Island through Thursday night. Winds may shift again Friday, possibly sending smoke back into the region. Officials advise limiting outdoor activity, especially for people with respiratory conditions.
