President Joe Biden has fired back at former President Donald Trump after Trump launched a formal investigation into who may have been in control of the White House during Biden’s time in office. The probe, which questions whether Biden’s aides exercised executive authority on his behalf due to his alleged cognitive decline, is already stirring political controversy.
Trump authorized White House Counsel David Warrington, in collaboration with Attorney General Pam Bondi, to investigate whether senior officials misled the public about Biden’s mental fitness and potentially bypassed constitutional protocols by acting in his name.
In a memo released earlier this week, Trump claimed that Biden’s aides may have routinely used an autopen—a device that replicates a person’s signature—to push executive orders and policy changes, all while hiding signs of mental decline. Trump called the alleged effort “one of the most dangerous and alarming scandals in American history.”
“If President Biden lacked the ability to govern and his advisors knowingly used a mechanical device to sign off on major executive actions, that would represent an unconstitutional misuse of presidential power,” Trump stated. “The American people deserve to know who was truly making decisions from the Oval Office.”
In response, Biden issued a strongly worded statement late Wednesday, dismissing the investigation as politically motivated and reaffirming his direct involvement in all presidential decisions.
“I was the one who made the calls—on pardons, executive orders, legislation, and official declarations. Any claim that I wasn’t is flat-out false,” Biden said.
He further accused Trump and Congressional Republicans of using the investigation as a smokescreen to distract from their legislative agenda.
“This is just a diversion. They’re pushing extreme policies that would cut vital programs like Medicaid and raise costs for working families—all to fund more tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations,” Biden added.
Despite Biden’s defense, new details continue to emerge. The Gateway Pundit reported that Reuters obtained an internal email from Ed Martin, the Justice Department’s pardon attorney, revealing he was instructed to review clemency decisions made near the end of Biden’s presidency. These included pardons reportedly given to close family members and inmates on death row.
According to Martin, a senior Democratic figure—described as a whistleblower—came forward in recent weeks, alleging that a small group of officials controlled access to Biden and the autopen. The whistleblower, who reportedly worked as a senior advisor during Biden’s 2020 campaign, claimed these individuals may have personally profited from their roles.
“I had someone with deep ties to the Democratic Party in my office who told me, ‘These three people were behind it, and they were financially benefiting,’” Martin said in an interview with political analyst Mark Halperin. “We’re not jumping to conclusions, but we’re committed to uncovering the truth and protecting the integrity of our government.”
The individuals allegedly named in the whistleblower’s account include former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, senior advisor Anita Dunn, and Biden’s personal attorney Bob Bauer. Former counselor Steve Ricchetti and First Lady Jill Biden were also described as playing influential roles within the administration.
As the investigation unfolds, both political camps are preparing for what could become a defining legal and constitutional battle ahead of the 2024 election season.
