Law enforcement has announced it will release the person of interest questioned in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University.
The manhunt for the suspect responsible for the attack remains ongoing.
Two people were killed and nine others were injured after a gunman opened fire on campus Saturday, according to authorities.
Overnight into Sunday morning, police took Benjamin Erickson into custody for questioning as a person of interest. Erickson is a Wisconsin native and was not enrolled as a student at Brown University.
Later Sunday, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that law enforcement would be releasing Erickson, citing insufficient evidence to move forward with charges.
“Officials do not have enough evidence to prosecute,” Smiley said.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez explained that the FBI acted on a tip that led investigators to Erickson. Authorities also examined his alleged history of mental health issues during the investigation.
“We will be releasing the person of interest who had been detained earlier today,” Smiley stated.
Acknowledging community concerns, the mayor said the decision may increase anxiety but emphasized there is no immediate threat.
“We have not received any credible or specific threats to the Providence community,” Smiley said. “The status of safety in our community remains unchanged, and we believe you remain safe.”
The investigation remains active as authorities continue searching for the suspect.
