British boxing star and former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal traffic collision in Nigeria’s Ogun State, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The 36-year-old athlete suffered only light injuries after the vehicle he was traveling in was involved in the crash, according to a statement from the Ogun State Police Command. Two people, however, lost their lives in the incident.
Law enforcement officials said an investigation is underway to determine what led to the collision. Joshua has not publicly commented on the incident, and attempts by international media to reach him were unsuccessful.
Video footage circulating on social media appears to show Joshua being assisted out of a damaged vehicle, though police have not confirmed whether the footage shows the exact car involved in the crash.
Multiple media outlets report that Joshua was seated in the rear of a Lexus SUV when it struck a stationary vehicle. The collision reportedly killed one passenger seated beside the driver and another passenger sitting next to Joshua in the back seat.
