Tik-Tok plans to shut down all operations in United States after the government discusses to ban the application from all stores last year.
The social media platform has announced plans to shut down operations in the United States on January 19 unless the Supreme Court intervenes to block or postpone the enforcement of a law requiring ByteDance, the Chinese-owned parent company of the app, to sell to an American buyer, according to the Associated Press.
Last year, President Joe Biden signed legislation mandating the removal of TikTok from U.S. app stores and prohibiting internet providers nationwide from granting access to the platform if ByteDance fails to sell to a U.S.-based company by January 19.
The law was enacted due to concerns that China could potentially use TikTok to spy on U.S. citizens.
In response, TikTok filed an emergency motion seeking an injunction to prevent the ban from going into effect, arguing it infringes on First Amendment rights and would lead to “significant financial losses,” according to legal documents reviewed by E! News.
The Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on January 10 to decide whether the law should be upheld.
