This morning around 5:30am three officers were shot and one man killed. The police officers are OK.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Florida Avenue Northeast around 5:30 a.m., near the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station. Authorities reported that all officers transported to the hospital were alert and breathing. The identity of the deceased man has not been released by police.
Officers responded to the apartment complex following reports of gunfire in the lobby. Upon arrival, they encountered a man who entered an elevator, initially evading law enforcement. The man later returned to the lobby via the elevator, where he was confronted by three officers. At that point, he drew a firearm and began shooting, prompting officers to return fire, fatally wounding him.
It remains unclear if the man was a resident of the apartment complex. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. All three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
Police have closed Florida Avenue Northeast between 4th and 5th Streets to conduct their investigation, and drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes. Authorities have not confirmed whether the officers were wearing body cameras during the incident.
