A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off southwestern Japan late Monday, triggering small tsunamis in the region, though no significant damage was reported.
The quake occurred around 18 kilometers (11 miles) off the Kyushu region at 9:19 p.m. local time (1219 GMT), according to the US Geological Survey. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued a warning for possible tsunami waves up to one meter (three feet) high, advising residents to avoid coastal waters.
However, smaller tsunamis of about 20 centimeters were observed at ports in the area, the JMA reported. Live broadcasts showed calm seas, with vessels operating normally and traffic continuing without disruptions.
Minor damage was reported, including a broken window at a train station and items falling from shelves in some stores, local media said. NHK reported that one man sustained a minor injury after falling in his home.
