A sixth individual has been detained in connection with the betting scandal that led to Jontay Porter receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA.
Porter, who is also facing legal charges, was expelled from the NBA after it came to light that he participated in a gambling scheme, providing insider information for the financial gain of his associates. Court filings disclosed this week include messages from Porter to those involved, including one where he mentioned that betting on his “unders” stats could yield “huge profits.”
“I understand my actions were both unlawful and wrong, and I sincerely apologize” Porter said.
On April 17, Porter was issued a lifetime ban following an NBA investigation that determined he had shared confidential details with gamblers and wagered on games himself, violating league regulations. The NBA explicitly forbids its players from engaging in any form of gambling related to the league or its affiliates.
The league’s inquiry revealed that between January and March of this year, while Porter was either playing for the Toronto Raptors or their G League affiliate, Raptors 905, he placed “at least 13 bets on NBA games through an associate’s betting account.”
In June, Porter’s attorney, Jeff Jensen, explained that his client had been “overwhelmed by a gambling addiction” but had begun seeking treatment and was actively cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
Porter’s brother Coban, started a six-year prison sentence in April for causing a fatal DUI accident. Another brother, Michael, is a key player for the Denver Nuggets.
