On Tuesday, President Nayib Bukele unveiled a substantial economic relief initiative during a press conference, announcing that the government will cover electricity and water bills for 95% of the population throughout January.
The relief program provides subsidies of up to $80 for electricity and $30 for potable water, targeting approximately 1.8 million households. President Bukele explained that the measure is designed to alleviate financial pressures on families, particularly following the expenses associated with the holiday season.
Households that have already paid their bills within the subsidy limits will be eligible for reimbursement in February. However, the initiative excludes businesses, industries, and government institutions. This measure is part of a larger economic recovery strategy launched in July 2024, which initially prioritized reducing tariffs on essential goods, including food and agricultural products.
President Bukele also emphasized El Salvador’s increasing appeal as a global tech destination. He highlighted recent technological investments, such as Tether’s decision to establish its headquarters in the country. These developments align with broader efforts to position El Salvador as a growing tech hub. Key initiatives, like the Aircity chip manufacturing project, aim to enhance digital infrastructure and cultivate a skilled workforce in programming and artificial intelligence.
Furthermore, Bukele defended the controversial approval of metallic mining, citing examples of sustainable mining practices in nations like Israel. He reiterated the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility through effective regulation, arguing that development and sustainability can coexist with proper oversight.
