Los Angeles, CA – Former U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived in Southern California on Friday to survey the devastation caused by wildfires, particularly in the Palisades area, CBS News reported.
Accompanied by California Governor Gavin Newsom, the Trumps toured fire-ravaged neighborhoods, witnessing firsthand the destruction that displaced thousands. During their visit, a touching moment occurred when a woman approached Melania Trump and spoke to her in Serbian. The former First Lady responded fluently, sparking admiration among Serbian communities in the U.S. and abroad.
Trump and Newsom Discuss Recovery Efforts
Upon landing in Los Angeles, the Trumps met briefly with Governor Newsom before addressing reporters. Earlier that day, Trump had visited North Carolina, where Hurricane Helen had caused significant damage.
“Now we’re going to do a little tour with people from the area. I’m happy for the governor to come out and meet me. We want to resolve the situation, we want to resolve the problem,” Trump stated.
Surveying the destruction, Trump expressed his shock: “It’s like a bomb hit you, isn’t it?” he remarked to Newsom.
Newsom acknowledged the federal response, stating, “Thank you for being here. It means a lot to all of us—not just the people of Palisades, but also Altadena, where homes were destroyed. We’re going to need your support and help. You were there for us during Covid, and I won’t forget that. I look forward to working together.”
Wildfires Leave a Trail of Destruction
The Palisades and Eaton wildfires have been among the deadliest in California history, claiming 28 lives and destroying thousands of homes, including luxury properties. The Eaton Fire alone killed at least 17 people and devastated over 10,000 structures.
“Nothing like this has ever happened,” Trump said, vowing to work with Newsom despite their political differences. “We want to get something done, and the way to get it done is to work together. He’s the governor of this state, and he’s going to need a lot of federal help.”
Despite the widespread destruction, Trump did not visit the Eaton Fire zone, where the death toll continues to rise.
Trump and Melania Depart for Separate Destinations
After the visit, Donald Trump left Los Angeles for Las Vegas, while Melania Trump took a separate flight to Florida, CBS News reported.
