France issued a stern warning to Donald Trump, cautioning against any threats to the European Union’s “sovereign borders” after the president-elect declined to rule out the use of military force to acquire Greenland.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot responded to Trump’s remarks, emphasizing that while he did not believe the United States would invade the Danish-controlled territory, the EU must stand firm against intimidation.
Speaking on France Inter radio, Barrot stated, “There is absolutely no scenario in which the European Union would permit any nation to challenge its sovereign borders, regardless of who they are. We are a united and strong continent.”
Donald Trump reiterated on Tuesday that Greenland should be sold to the United States, citing “national security” concerns. He also called for the return of the Panama Canal to U.S. control.
‘Survival of the fittest’
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, responding to these comments, said, “If you’re asking me whether I think the United States will invade Greenland, my answer is no. But have we entered a period defined by survival of the fittest? Then my answer is yes.”
Barrot urged Europe to resist being “intimidated” or “overcome by anxiety” in the face of such rhetoric. “We must wake up and strengthen ourselves in a world increasingly dominated by the law of the strongest,” he added.
In the wake of Trump’s remarks, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede traveled to Copenhagen for a meeting with Denmark’s King Frederik. While initially announced as postponed, the Danish royal court confirmed on Wednesday that the meeting would proceed as planned.
