Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani revealed during an Inside City Hall interview on Tuesday that he recently reconnected with President Donald Trump. Their follow-up talk came after their friendly White House meeting last month.
“I spoke briefly with the president,” Mamdani said. “I kept the conversation focused on the welfare of New Yorkers. Many families still struggle with a cost-of-living crisis, even if it is no longer national news.”

Condolences After Deadly Attack
Mamdani also offered condolences for the attack on two National Guardsmen. One Guardswoman later lost her life.
He told NY1 that he expressed his sympathies directly to Trump while also discussing the need for more housing in New York.
Mamdani Plans to Oppose ICE Raids as Mayor
The call took place shortly after federal immigration raids on Canal Street.
Mamdani said he will keep protesting ICE actions once he takes office.
“I told the president that these raids are cruel and inhumane,” he said.
President Trump campaigned on mass deportations of criminal aliens and immigrants who entered the country illegally.
Economists say the housing and affordability crisis deepened because the Biden administration allowed millions of migrants into the country during his term.
Meeting With Adams for Power Transition
On Tuesday, Mamdani met outgoing Mayor Eric Adams for the first time since the election. The meeting lasted a little over an hour.
“It focused on a smooth transition for New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.
He is considering keeping several Adams administration officials, including Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos.
“I appreciate her work,” Mamdani said. “I will judge every official by their results, not by who appointed them.”
Inauguration Plans and Housing Decision
Mamdani’s team has not yet chosen a location for his January 1 inauguration. He promised that everyday New Yorkers will take part in the ceremony.
His transition team is reviewing nearly 70,000 résumés for roles in the new administration.
He is also deciding whether to live in the taxpayer-funded Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side.
Mamdani currently lives in a rent-controlled apartment in Astoria, Queens.
“I am not at a decision point,” he said. “But I enjoyed visiting Gracie Mansion under Mayor Adams and Mayor de Blasio.”
