Just two days after officially becoming a President, Donald Trump ordered the presence of U.S Military troops to prevent the chaos with the current immigrants situation.
Approximately 2,200 active-duty soldiers are currently stationed at the border as part of Joint Task Force-North, a mission under US Northern Command based in El Paso, Texas. These troops primarily assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection by handling logistical and administrative duties, including data entry, surveillance, monitoring, and vehicle upkeep.
There are no specific details about which units are being deployed to the border.
A National Guard operation known as Operation Lonestar, which is led by the Texas National Guard, is also active at the southern border. Around 4,500 National Guardsmen are currently part of this mission, according to the Texas Military Department.
Officials have said that the additional active-duty troops being deployed to the border this week will take on similar responsibilities and are expected to integrate with and bolster Joint Task Force-North.
The troops will help the others present in maintaining operational readiness for Border Patrol by supporting command-and-control centers and providing additional intelligence specialists to evaluate threats and monitor migrant movements. They are also expected to enhance air actions by contributing to air operations and supporting aerial assets.
It remains uncertain whether the troops will be armed. However, active-duty personnel are not authorized to carry out any law enforcement activities, such as making arrests, seizing drugs, or directly interacting with migrants, except to assist in transporting them to and between various migrant facilities.
