Russia has rejected the idea of sending NATO peacekeepers to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, saying that such a move threatens to lead to “uncontrollable escalation.”
Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s press and information department Maria Zakharova said that the idea is completely unacceptable for Russia.
During the press conference, she referred to the statements of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius about sending troops to the peacekeepers in Ukraine.
Pistorius said in an interview on Jan. 18 that Germany, as NATO’s biggest ally in Europe, would definitely “play a role.”
Starmer said on Jan. 16 that Britain had discussed the possibility of an allied peacekeeping force and that “we will play our full role.”
Russia has said it is open to dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has vowed to end the war quickly.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is seeking a meeting with Trump, said on Tuesday that at least 200,000 European peacekeepers would be needed to prevent another Russian attack after a ceasefire.
