Earlier was reported that Trump officials are putting a pause on most federal government websites, which are expected to go dark today, but they are still working.
The decision to temporarily take down certain websites was initially reported by CBS News, which stated that the action was intended to remove diversity-related material. Meanwhile, Fox News claimed the move sought to eliminate diversity content and any wording that conflicted with Trump’s agenda.
Shortly after 5 p.m., some users experienced outages on the U.S. Census website. It was unclear if any other websites were affected. Government sites such as the Treasury and State Department remained accessible.
The duration of any website disruptions was uncertain.
When asked earlier whether government websites would be taken offline that evening to remove Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion content, Trump responded to reporters:
“I don’t know. It doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me,” Trump said.
“I think DEI is dead, so (if) they want to scrub the websites, that’s OK with me,” he added.
Since taking office on Jan. 20, Trump has moved swiftly to dismantle federal diversity initiatives, drawing criticism from rights advocates who worry he is reversing progress in combating discrimination.
While some of his supporters and allies have welcomed these actions, advocacy groups have condemned them, arguing that they could worsen inequalities and undo decades of civil rights advancements for marginalized communities.
