AFP reported that two Hamas officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the group’s readiness to begin negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas Prepares for Negotiations on Hostage Exchange and Israeli Withdrawal
One official stated that Hamas had informed Egyptian mediators in Cairo, during ongoing communications and meetings last week, that they are ready to start negotiations for the next phase. Another official added that they are now waiting for the mediators to initiate the next round of talks.
Hostage Exchange and Israeli Forces Withdrawal Expected in Second Phase
The second phase of negotiations is expected to focus on the exchange of the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza for a larger number of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. As part of the de-escalation efforts, a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza is anticipated.
Permanent Ceasefire to Be Discussed for Long-Term Peace
Finally, the parties are expected to discuss the establishment of a permanent ceasefire, which would serve as a long-term effort to end the ongoing conflict in the region.
