Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for closer collaboration among Ukraine’s allies as U.S. president-elect Donald Trump prepared to take office.
Speaking on Thursday, Zelensky expressed optimism about the incoming administration, describing it as a period of “new opportunities.”
“A new chapter is beginning for Europe and the entire world — just 11 days from now,” Zelensky stated during a meeting of Ukraine’s allies in Germany. “This is a time when we must work together more closely, depend on each other more, and achieve even greater successes together. I view this as a moment of potential and progress.”
The EU’s foreign policy chief expressed hope on Thursday that the United States would continue supporting Ukraine after president-elect Donald Trump assumes office, while affirming that the European Union is prepared to take the lead if necessary.
“I am confident that all other members, and hopefully the United States as well, are committed to maintaining their support for Ukraine,” Kaja Kallas stated before attending a meeting of Ukraine’s allies at a U.S. base in Germany.
Kallas emphasized, “The European Union is ready to step into a leadership role if the United States chooses not to.”
Addressing journalists, she cautioned against speculating about future U.S. policies but highlighted that the United States has significant strategic interests in Europe. “It’s not in America’s interest for Russia to become the dominant global power,” she noted.
“I believe that once the new leadership takes office, they will understand the broader implications,” Kallas added, speaking ahead of Trump’s January 20 inauguration.
