California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order allowing fire victims to bypass bureaucratic red tape to quickly rebuild their homes and “build back better.”
He said: “When the fires are extinguished, victims who have lost their homes and businesses must be able to rebuild quickly and without roadblocks. The executive order I signed today will help cut permitting delays, an important first step in allowing our communities to recover faster and stronger. I’ve also ordered our state agencies to identify additional ways to streamline the rebuilding and recovery process.”
Governor Newsom’s executive order will:
- Waive CEQA reviews and California Coastal Act permits for rebuilding efforts on properties heavily damaged or destroyed by recent wildfires in Southern California.
- Task state agencies with identifying other permitting requirements, including aspects of the Building Code, that can be safely adjusted or eliminated to speed up reconstruction and reduce costs.
- Extend measures to prevent price gouging on essential items like construction materials, storage services, and labor in Los Angeles County until January 7, 2026.
- Work with the Legislature to propose legal changes that can simplify the rebuilding process while improving wildfire safety and resilience.
Governor Newsom is dedicated to assisting those impacted by the wildfires, continuing to take administrative action and collaborate with lawmakers to help restore their communities.
