Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stressed that the United States needs to send a strong message to China, making it clear that an invasion of Taiwan would carry severe consequences.
He highlighted the importance of showing U.S. resolve in protecting Taiwan’s sovereignty and outlining the substantial economic, diplomatic, and military penalties China would incur if it engaged in such actions.
“I believe we need to come to terms with the reality that, unless there’s a significant shift—such as achieving a balance between China and Taiwan, where China determines the costs of intervening in Taiwan are too steep—we will likely face this issue before the decade ends,” Rubio stated during his Senate confirmation hearing.
