A dangerous encounter inside an Ohio Walmart ended without loss of life after a firearm malfunction and the quick intervention of a store employee, according to police and local news reports.
The incident took place around 1:45 p.m. Thursday at a Walmart store on Atlantic Boulevard NE in Canton. An officer with the Canton Police Department responded to a reported shoplifting call and escorted two individuals to the store’s loss prevention office.
Situation Escalates Inside Loss Prevention Office
According to investigators, the situation changed rapidly once inside the office. One suspect, identified as 21-year-old Shane Newman, allegedly attempted to use a firearm against the responding officer. The weapon failed to discharge, preventing what authorities say could have been a deadly outcome.
A second individual, 23-year-old Katerina Jeffrey, was also detained in connection with the incident.
Walmart Employee Intervenes to Stop Suspect
Moments after the attempted attack, a Walmart asset protection employee stepped in and tackled the suspect, preventing further action. The officer then assisted in restraining Newman and placing him into custody.
Law enforcement officials said the employee’s quick response played a key role in bringing the incident under control.
Body Camera Footage Shows Officer’s Split-Second Decision
Police later reviewed body-worn camera footage that shows the officer chose not to fire his own weapon during the struggle. Investigators said the decision was made out of concern for the safety of the store employee who had intervened at close range.
Employee Identified as U.S. Marine Corps Veteran
According to coworkers, the Walmart employee has been identified as Conrad Piero, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Authorities acknowledged that his actions were instrumental in preventing further harm.
Investigation Ongoing, No Serious Injuries Reported
The incident was first reported by FOX10. Police confirmed that no serious injuries were reported and said the investigation remains ongoing, with potential additional charges under review.
Officials credited both the officer’s restraint and the employee’s intervention for helping avoid a tragic outcome.
