Shortly after the Justice Department released a new batch of Jeffrey Epstein case files, officials removed an image that includes Donald Trump from the agency’s website. Almost immediately, the move sparked backlash and renewed concerns about transparency.
According to the US Department of Justice, officials flagged the image after victims’ advocates raised concerns. Because the photo showed unredacted images of women, the department decided to pause access and review the material more closely.
DOJ Restores Image After Internal Review
After completing that review, the Justice Department concluded that no Epstein victims appeared in the photograph. As a result, officials reposted the image without edits or redactions.
At the same time, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche pushed back against claims of political interference. He said the decision had nothing to do with Trump and pointed out that numerous photos of Trump with Epstein have circulated publicly for years.
Inside the Photograph
The image shows a desk inside Epstein’s residence with an open drawer filled with photographs. Among them is a picture of Trump standing with Epstein, former first lady Melania Trump, and Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Framed photos also sit on top of the desk, offering a wider view of the room.
Lawmakers Press for Answers
Meanwhile, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee questioned why the image disappeared without public explanation. Their concerns intensified when at least 13 additional Epstein-related files vanished from the DOJ website and, as of Sunday evening, had not reappeared.
In response, the department said it acted “out of an abundance of caution” and cited legal obligations to protect victims’ identities.
Broader Scrutiny of the Epstein File Release
More broadly, the episode highlights growing frustration over how the Epstein documents are being released. Although Congress ordered the files made public, many documents remain heavily redacted, and critics argue the process has created more suspicion than clarity.
Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein and has not been accused of crimes by Epstein’s victims. Officials continue to emphasize that the image itself does not suggest criminal conduct.
